What is a Fishtail Stone Setting?

Also known as a French Pavé Setting, the Fishtail Setting is a combination of a castle setting and a pavé and has an elegant side profile that looks like fishtails. This is a very popular setting to master and really allows the gemstones to sparkle.

This masterclass will run live for two months with Q&A support sessions with Scott and a dedicated Facebook group to connect with other jewellers making at the same time as you, as well as mentors to support your learning.

Course start date: wednesday 5th February 2025

Please note all live sessions will be recorded and you can watch the replay if you can’t make it live. If you have questions for Scott you can also share them with us ahead of time for her to answer on the sessions.

What You Will Learn


This masterclass is packed full of techniques including…

  • Preparing you metal for fishtail setting and which dimensions you will need for this setting.

  • Marking and drilling accurate neat holes and seats for your stone using a range of burrs

  • Creating the well known decorative fishtail-style engravings on the side of the settings

  • How to do this all by hand using a pendant motor, simple setting tools and gravers

  • In the circular project you will learn to mark out and set around a central setting.

  • A few different variations on these designs

  • Plus tons of hints and tips from everyones favourite stone setter Scott McIntyre along the way.

How the online Training Works

We are professionals in online training for jewellers

Having run online programmes for jewellers for over 10 years, we are world-class leaders in this type of training. This is a cohort-based style learning in which you will work at your own pace through the course over the two months.

Alongside the professionally filmed videos there will be three live sessions with Scott to help you get any questions answered and learn more about the techniques you are learning as you work through the programme.

Who is the MASTERCLASS for?

The masterclass series is designed as a perfect follow on from the Advanced Jewellery Diploma and is aimed at advanced jewellers who are experienced in soldering, piercing, stone setting and polishing and finishing jewellery.

For the Fishtail Masterclass you need to have some experience of pavé setting.

Scott McIntyre is a Master Goldsmith and Founding Director of Vanilla Ink Jewellery School & Studios. With over 25 years of experience in the jewellery industry, there isn’t much Scott doesn’t know! After years of working as a jeweller in high-end workshops across Scotland’s Central Belt, he found his calling as a naturally gifted tutor.

Scott is a thorough, deliberate and professional tutor.

Scott is the author of the very popular book ‘Stone Setting’ - so who better to teach you!

What are my options?

You have two options for enrolling on this Masterclass.

  1. Enrol on the Fishtail Stone Setting Masterclass starting on 5th February 2025 and running with live support for 2 months. If you just want this course only, this is the link you need to enrol

  2. Enrol on the Masterclass Bundle which gives you three Jewellers Masterclasses. You will start with Fishtail Stone Setting on 5th February 2025, then do Tiara Wedding band starting in April 2025 and finally Decorative Collets starting in October 2025. When you purchase the bundle of Masterclasses you save money. With this option you can choose to pay in full or spread the cost over 8 months.
