Master One of the Core Skills of Jewellery Making: Piercing (Sawing)

To become a confident, professional jeweller, there are three essential skills to build: sawing, filing, and soldering.

Sawing -also known as piercing - is one of the most rewarding and versatile techniques to learn. Once you’ve mastered it, you unlock the potential to make the jewellery designs you have in your head.

And to help you sharpen your skills, I’ve created two FREE themed templates just for you.

Whether you're just starting out or you're ready for more of a challenge, you’ll find a design that suits your level - beginner, intermediate, or advanced.

Our top tips for sawing and piercing

  •  Use beeswax to help lubricate the saw before sawing.

  • Create a small groove/notch before sawing to help guide your saw more accurately. To do this place the saw blade where you want to start sawing, then pull the blade up to create a groove/notch in the metal.

  • Always try to hold the metal either side of the blade to hold the piece still whilst sawing.

  • The saw cuts on the downward stroke, so when sawing aim to keep the blade straight and without an angle. Move the metal as you saw instead of the saw in order to keep it in the correct position.

  • If you approach a tricky junction in your metal, reverse out then re-enter from another angle to cut the rest of the shape out.

  • To reverse out, gently move the blade up and down whilst edging the blade back out of the channel you have just cut. Give it time and be gentle. It is easy to break the blade in this process.

  • To change direction, move your blade up and down on the spot which you change your angle.
