What will I learn?

On the Making Gold Jewellery course you will learn how to design and make gold and mixed metal silver and gold rings (which means you can add a touch of gold while keeping the cost down - hurray)


Learn to make FOUR ring designs:

  • A Yellow Gold band

  • A Hammered and textured yellow gold ring

  • A Sterling silver ring with gold nugget embellishment

  • A Gold tube set faceted stone on a sterling silver ring


So you will learn tonnes of great techniques including:

  • working with gold

  • texturing and hammering

  • soldering gold

  • working with mixed metals - silver and gold

  • tube setting with gold tube

And lots more tips and tricks


While the focus is on rings, with the skills you learn the world will be like new for you and you will be able to create other designs in gold and mixed metals including pendants, earrings etc.

meet your tutor, goldsmith hayley kruger

Hayley is an award winning bench jeweller with over 20 years of experience. She was awarded Bronze Award for her jewellery design at the Goldsmiths council Craft & Design Awards 2023.

Having gained a BA Honours in jewellery & silversmithing, Hayley went on to work as a designer for many of the UK's most recognisable retailers and brands such as Top Shop, Marks & Spencer, River Island, Next, Lola Rose, Orelia, Morgan and many more.
She went on to launch her own ranges of fashion jewellery and has been stocked in the USA, France, Australia and the UK as well as exhibiting at the V&A museum, London Fashion Week, London Jewellery week, and in galleries on both sides of the Atlantic. Her work has been featured in music videos and media such as Vogue.com, Tatler, Stylist and Glamour magazine.

What level of jeweller is this course designed for?

This course is suitable for jewellers who have experience of working with sheet silver metal and are competent at soldering and basic stone setting.

If you are new to working with silver but would like to give it a try take a look at our beginners course The Silver Jewellery Workshop, the Soldering Masterclass and Stone Setting in Silver first. You will need some experience of tube stone setting to make these pieces.


What tools do I need?

  • Silver jewellery tool kit including bench peg, saw, needle files, steel block, chasing hammer (for hammered designs)

  • Soldering equipment including torch, soldering block, pickle, steel block, third hand

  • Stone setting - stone setting burr the same size as your stone, pin vice handle, square pusher, curved or straight burnisher


What materials do I need?

Note: These are the sizes that Hayley used in the video but the same instructions can be used for other thicknesses of wire from 1mm upwards. The length of wire you require for your projects will depend on your ring size. The course notes include a chart to help calculate how much you need.

Project 1: 9 carat yellow gold wire, 1.5mm thick

Project 2: 9 carat yellow gold wire, 1.5mm thick

Project 3: 1.5 mm thick sterling silver wire
approx 20mm 9 carat rose gold wire (any offcuts of gold will do. You could also use gold casting grain)

Project 4: 2mm thick sterling silver wire
9 carat yellow gold tube (Hayley used 3.5mm diameter tube approx 8mm depth)
3mm round brilliant cut gemstone

For all projects - silver solder - medium and hard

9 carat gold solder - medium and hard
