meet your tutor, hayley kruger

Hayley Kruger is a jewellery designer and jewellery industry professional who has worked in many aspects of the trade since 2002. With a BA Honours in Jewellery & Silversmithing, Hayley went onto work as a designer for many of the UK's most recognisable retailers such as Top Shop, Marks & Spencer, River Island, Next, Lola Rose, Orelia, Morgan and many more.

She taught for many years at the London Jewellery School and has been a mentor for the Jewellers Academy Diploma courses since the beginning, currently mentoring on the Advanced Jewellery Diploma.

Hayley was invited to show her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum, has been published in Vogue, Stylist and Marie Claire to name a few. And she was invited to be an ambassador for Triumph Lingerie's Women in Making campaigns 2013 and 2014.

Using the experience she gained, Hayley now works from her studio in Cirencester on private commissions including engagement rings and shares her knowledge on various aspects of the jewellery industry.

What level of jeweller is this course designed for?

This course is designed to take you from beginner level at soldering and give you the skills and confidence to practice and master the skills.



What tools do I need?

  • Silver jewellery tool kit including bench peg, jewellers saw, Files - needle and large hand files, Hand drill, dremel or pendant motor, Drill bit - 1mm

  • Soldering equipment - Soldering block - small and large, Handheld torch, Butane gas, Flux - borax cone and dish or liquid flux, Paint brush, Fine tipped steel tweezers, 3rd hand, Wire mesh, Reverse action tweezers, Pyrex dish of water, Slow cooker for pickle, Safety pickle, Plastic sieve, Brass tweezers, Plastic tweezers, Paper towel, Apron, Safety Glasses. Tin snips



what materials do I need?

We recommend practicing first in brass and copper. You will need small amounts of copper or brass to practice the soldering techniques and copper wire - 0.8mm and 1mm to practice chain making.

Easy, medium and hard silver solder strips.

is soldering the same for silver and gold?

Yes, the technique of soldering is the same regardless which metal you are using.

is this the same type of soldering as for stained glass and electrical work?

No, that is a very different skill to learn. If you want to learn to solder precious metals like silver and gold you need to use these techniques. A soldering iron does not work for this.
