Soldering is one of the basic techniques needed for successful silver and gold jewellery making. The key to developing your soldering skills is patience and practice! Read on for some top soldering tips
Here are a few practical tips for those of you who are finding it a little tricky to perfect this technique.
- Solder will not fill a gap - It is important that you make sure that the two pieces of metal fit together.
- Learn what flux works best for you - There is no right or wrong flux to use. Flux is flux! Whether it is liquid flux or borax, use what you are most comfortable with.
- It is best to use hard solder for your joins - If you are starting out and a little confused, remember that it is best practise to use harder solder.
- Colour solder with different coloured sharpie - It can be hard to tell which solder you have if you drop it! A little colour will burn away and will make it much easier to identify the solder on your bench.
- Try out easy, medium and hard solder on a piece of metal - Put a small amount of each solder onto a piece of metal (e.g. Copper) and heat. This will give you a better understanding of how long it takes for each to melt and develop your awareness of how the solder works.
