answers to your questions

Thank you for your questions on the day. Here are the answers

Do you have to have a kiln for the course?

Yes you need access to a programmable jewellers kiln

If you are on a budget we recommend the Prometheus Mini Kiln Pro 1 which will work for all the projects on the course.

If you have a bigger budget we recommend the Paragon SC2.

Do have a listen to this podcast episode on buying a kiln for more advice.

Who are the masterclass tutors?
In term 3 you have a series of masterclasses from world renowned metal clay artists.

  • Enamelling in Metal Clay with Joy Funnell

  • Sculptural Silver Metal Clay Project with Anna Mazoń

  • Lidded Vessels, Screw-top Necklace with Julia Rai

  • Advanced Metal Clay Constructed Ring Project with Tracey Spurgin

How do we submit our work to you for assessment?

Students submit their work at the end of every term. This is sent to us in London, UK. The deadline for sending the work is the same wherever you are in the world. We give you a customs letter and you mark your parcel as 'examination material'. You pay to ship the work to us and we pay to ship it back to you. This is an important part of the course as your pieces are then sent to your mentor for assessment and you then get one to one feedback on what you're doing well and constructive feedback on how to improve. If you do not want to participate in certification but want to enrol on the course you are welcome to do so. You get lifetime access to the course so can do it at your own pace

Do you have a list of recommended places to purchase tools /metal clay outside of the UK?

Yes, we have a list of jewellery suppliers worldwide here https://www.jewellersacademy.com/jewellery-supplies We strongly recommend that everyone enrolling on the course gets the materials pack. There are some items e.g. the gold leaf for keum boo and the enamels that are being sent in the quantity you need for the course. If you were to buy them yourselves you would need to buy in full sizes

Will the course also cover copper metal clay?

This Diploma course is specifically for working with silver and gold. We are not covering copper metal clay. However, the techniques used in the course are the same regardless of metal clay you are working in. The only difference is the firing so you just fire your copper pieces as directed on the packet. You also need a second set of tools when working with a base metal in order to avoid contaminating your silver clay

Roughly how much time a week would you suggest you need to put aside to do the course (work full time)

It is one day a week so we suggest setting aside 6-7 hours per week. That doesn't have to be done on one day, it can be done over a few evenings or weekends. Many of our current students are working full-time and are balancing it all

what happens if you are no longer on Facebook?

(This question is because the course includes an exclusive Facebook group staffed by an expert to answer questions)

We do suggest starting an account even if it's just for accessing the support. If you prefer not to use Facebook you do, of course, have the other support. The fortnightly Zoom with your tutor group and your one-to-one mentoring
