Background
We have been running our Diploma programmes at the London Jewellery School for 7 years now. We have always been asked if we could take our Diploma courses online for those that could not visit London and in 2020 we did! The online Diploma in Silver Jewellery is currently underway and we wanted to add to our Diploma programmes so we’ve been working hard behind the scenes for months to bring you this brand new course.
What techniques will i learn?
There are lots of great advanced skills to add to your knowledge including:
Advanced bench skills - reticulation, keum boo (gold leaf), filigree
Advanced stone setting - claw setting with round, oval, pear and cushion cuts, pear-shaped collet, star stone setting, marquise 5 stone set ring
Working with gold, silver and mixed metal pieces
Making your own findings - clasps, bails, scroll back earrings, box clasps
Creole hinged earrings, lockets, tennis bracelet
Advanced stone setting in wax
Gemstone masterclass, jewellery design and rendering

experience level required
This course is suitable for intermediate to advanced level jewellers who are experienced in making jewellery using traditional bench skills.
The skills you already need to have are:
Comfortable working with the tools in a silver jewellery workshop - able to use the main tools, saw, file, pickle, polish
Confident in basic stone settings - cabochon, tube and flush setting
Advanced stone setting - you need to have successfully made at least one piece with a claw setting and one piece with a collet setting before the start of the course. (If you haven’t done these at the time of enrolment that’s fine. If you enrol before 1st February 2021 you will get free access to Makers Membership which includes courses in claw and collet setting. You must commit to having these skills before 6th September 2021)
Confident with soldering multiple joins in one piece - at least 3 solder joins
We recommend that you look at what is covered in this course and our Diploma in Silver Jewellery. If you can do 80% of what is covered in the Silver Jewellery Diploma then you are ideal for this course!
If you feel like you are nearly there and would like to do some practice that is fine. If you enrol by 1st February 2021 you will get 8 months Makers Membership for free (worth £232). This gives you access to all of our individual jewellery making courses meaning you will be able to practice your skills.
Please be aware that we will not be covering the basics of jewellery making, stone setting and soldering. To get the most out of this course you will need to already be proficient. If you feel you’re not yet at that level then do take a look at the Diploma in Silver Jewellery. This course has been designed as the perfect follow on from that.
We know that some of the students on this course will already have a jewellery business or will be working towards setting one up. We have purposely ensured that the making part of term 1 is complete by the first week in November so that you can concentrate on your Christmas orders.
How does the course work?
This is an online course that is designed for students around the world so that time zone is not an issue!
You get weekly video lessons and downloadable notes. You have full flexibility of how to fit your jewellery study into your week but as a guide we suggest you set aside a day per week (6 to 7 hours). That doesn’t have to be all in one go.
This is not just an online course, this is a full learning experience as you also get 1 to 1 and group support from professional goldsmiths including:
1-2-1 mentoring sessions over live video at a time that works for you
Twice weekly LIVE Q&A sessions with a course mentor to get the support you need (attend as many or as few as you like)
Exclusive access to the Diploma in Fine Jewellery student Facebook Group to share your weekly progress, ask questions and get feedback
Ongoing access to the Diploma video lessons. Go back to them anytime you want even after the course has ended
Assessment
Your work is assessed and graded by a professional jeweller and 1-2-1 video feedback will be provided to help you to continue to learn and improve.
At the end of the course, we will be awarding students the Diploma in Fine Jewellery accredited by the London Jewellery School. This is awarded to students that have completed and submitted all the assessed work to the required standard by the course deadlines. You are assessed at Distinction, Merit and Pass levels and full marking criteria and guidance is provided at the beginning of each term
tools and materials
As you are already a jeweller you will have the majority if not all of the tools you need to participate in this course. We are finalising our tool list and plan to publish it in January 2021. You can get an indication of the tools needed if you take a look at the tool list for the Diploma in Silver Jewellery here >
We will have a limited number of materials kits available. These will have prepared bags of materials for each week including silver, gold and gemstones. There will also be some additional scrap metal provided for practicing.
You are welcome to source your own materials. A detailed list will be published in January 2021
